About
Mehfil-e-Shayeri:
The Poetry Gathering

This site is a celebration of multi-lingual poetry.

You will find poems composed by poets local to the Leicester area as well as eminent guest poets. You will also find poems which have inspired our poets specially selected to share with you.

The poems are in English, Gujarati, Hindi, Panjabi and Urdu and are presented on this website in Roman Transcription.

Mehfil-E-Shayeri began its life as a once monthly mehfil, or gathering, of local poets and poetry enthusiasts in 2004. We meet first Saturday of every month at St. Barnabas Library Leicester (UK). The quality of poetry delivered at these mehfilen encouraged us to begin work on an online mehfil.

This website founded in spring 2006, aims to make the poems delivered at St. Barnabas Library mehfilen available online, giving the contributors the opportunity to be published and share their poetry in wider circles.

If you live in the U.K. and would like to attend one of our sessions, click the events button above and view our events diary and why not bring along a poem to share.

This site contains poems from our “mehfil” (sessions) written using the English alphabet, so that maximum people will be able to read and enjoy them.

In addition to this, we will be including photos and select audio footage of parts of the events to enable you to listen to the best bits again at home.

The site is updated monthly after each event. Don’t forget this is your site, if you wish to have your poetry added then please don’t hesitate to email us at info@mehfil-e-shayeri.org

We are open to suggestions, so if you have any ideas for improvements to this site please email us or talk to the coordinator when you come to attend the event. We promise you that this is only the beginning; we aim to do many other things with your help. So please come and join us.
